Verse of the Day: Psalm 61:2 Lead Me to the Rock
What to do when you feel overwhelmed.
From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
David found himself at the end of his rope, after a lifetime of successes, struggles, and trials. And yet, he continued to model the same behaviors…seeking God and acknowledging His supremacy.
It’s a heart posture that can be easy to forget when the successes come. But when the difficulties of life, the betrayal of those you love, the issues of life threaten to consume you…what do you do?
What do you do when life feels too hard to bear?
But when your heart is overwhelmed, you can depend on God…the rock that is higher than I.
David continues in verse 3:
For You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy.
And that matters because it’s a testimony from his earlier years when David needed God. Remember when Saul chased him, God protected David. And in his “situation” with Bathsheba, God chastised and restored him.
Yes, David had to live with and deal with the consequences of his actions and his decisions. But what I’ve found is so amazing about God is that He does not put us away when our decisions don’t align with His ways. I’ve learned to ask God for forgiveness, to forgive others, accept the disciplinary measures He put in place for me…
…and to keep moving forward.
Because God Doesn’t Abandon Us
God does not throw out the baby with the bath water…so why do we act as though we’ve been abandoned? He didn’t give up on David and He hasn’t given up on you.
Consider adjusting the way you think about what’s happening in your life.
I’m not advocating that we stay in negative, abusive situations. I am saying be wise, seek God, and let what you do be His way. You know your situation…be wise and safe.
As David said in verse 4,
I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah
We can do the same. Don’t turn away from God, turn toward him.
A Mindset and Heart Posture to Adapt
There’s wisdom in David’s words that is still relevant for us.
When your heart is overwhelmed, serve the true and living God who takes care of you. He is the rock that is “higher than I”.
Regardless of the situation, choosing God is better than trying to fight your battle on your own.
God uses people to help and bless you. Find your people.
